Creating a drop zone/ entry when one doesn’t exist
Many homes do not have a spacious foyer, mudroom or drop zone. What a formal entry or foyer offers is usually a more spacious and sometimes even a dedicated room that is stylishly decorated for taking off your shoes, jacket and setting down your items like keys or a purse. Sometimes, homes combine a mudroom/ laundry combo doubling the duties and making it extremely convenient especially if clothes are messy. This space is usually found off of a garage. A mudroom or drop zone works as a workhorse for sports equipment, backpacks totes of groceries and muddy dog paws. In today’s times some mudrooms are even equipped with dog washing stations. A lot of us have neither and have to create these zones to do the job in a much smaller footprint. Here are some tips and tricks for creating these nonexistent spaces into a spot that helps you navigate your comings and goings each day.
Wall Hooks
Small bench, stool or chair.
Shoe storage
Console table
Storage such as baskets, lockers, cubbies etc.
Some people’s doors literally fall into whatever room leaving it difficult to figure out how or where to place things to act as entryway. Whether it’s the living room or kitchen these spaces can be hard to tackle due to the lack of space. Some of the things listed above can be used by the door to showcase the job of drop zone.
Some other things you may add if space allows are:
Coat rack
Umbrella holder
Mirrors
Lighting (lamps, decorative ceiling lights or sconces.)
It is my understanding that not everything listed above is going to fit into the limited amount of space you have and that is okay. You do not want to over clutter it and create even less space for a person(s) to enter the home.
