Salisbury Steak with onion gravy
This is a little different than my regular posts on decor and design. But, hey we all need to eat right? Including myself. I too need to take a break from styling and decorating and make dinner for myself and the family. Last night was one of those nights when I knew I wanted something hearty, tasteful and filling but really was not up to standing at the stove/oven for an hour. I have made Salisbury steaks in the past. I have followed recipes I have found but was yet to be impressed. Taking the basic fundamentals from past recipes I ran to the store earlier in the day and had much of the day to think about my plan of action. Lucky, for me that little bit of effort and thought turned into the best thing (I think) I have ever made. LOL. Most recipes I came across use a mushroom gravy or mushrooms in combination with onions etc.
A few tips before I share…
Most recipes have you cook the Salisbury steaks in tandem with the onions and mushroom and gravy.
I CHOSE TO NOT DO THIS. Yes, I rebelled on this one. I must say I am so glad I did!!!
I chose to solely use just onions. Boy, I really was feeling rebellious.
Essentially, a Salisbury steak is a hamburger with gravy on top served without a bun.
Which brings me to my next point… since it is a hamburger, I made the patties and grilled them making the gravy in the house in a separate pan. Below, I will share two recipes one for the burgers the other for the onion gravy.
Hamburger Patties-
1 lb .Ground meat (guys getting meat at the grocery stores just does not compare to getting it from a local butcher. Try to use good meat. This too makes a world of difference.)
Bread crumbs: I used a good bit. The key to this though is not using so much that it dries the meat.
Worcestershire Sauce- Don’t be shy now with it.
Ketchup…. I gave a good ol bit it helped bind the patties together.
Seasonings: Onion flakes, Onion Powder, Ground Mustard, Mediterranean Sea Salt, Peppercorn Medley, Garlic Powder and Oregano.
Form patties and grill.
Onion Gravy-
1 onion, chopped.
In a skillet pan add the onion to some olive oil, give a chance to let that all go for a bit.
Add in Worcestershire sauce.
A little brown sugar.
Salt, pepper, garlic powder, minced onion flakes, onion powder.
Caramelize the onions.
1 packet of brown gravy made separately in a small pot. Then added to the skillet with caramelized onions.
Mix together and spoon on top of your hamburger.
Voila, Enjoy! *Chefs Kiss*
